Dyslexia Assessment

A comprehensive assessment to understand how your child learns and whether their profile is consistent with dyslexia.

Could your child have dyslexia?

You may have noticed that your child is finding reading, spelling or writing harder than expected, despite their efforts and support at school.

Perhaps they are struggling to remember sounds, read unfamiliar words, spell consistently, work quickly or keep up with written tasks.

You may simply feel that something isn't quite adding up.

A dyslexia assessment can provide a clearer picture of your child's strengths and areas of difficulty, helping you understand how they learn and what support may be most helpful.

What does a dyslexia assessment involve?

📖 Reading & spelling

Assessment of reading accuracy, fluency, comprehension and spelling.

🧠 Cognitive & processing skills

Exploring areas such as memory, processing and phonological skills that can contribute to literacy difficulties.

✏️ Writing

Looking at aspects of writing and underlying skills where appropriate.

💡 Overall profile

Bringing the different areas together to understand your child's individual pattern of strengths and difficulties.

The assessment is tailored to your child rather than being a simple pass/fail test.

What happens on the day?

The assessment takes approximately 2½–3 hours.

It takes place in a quiet, child-friendly environment in Weston-super-Mare.

Before the assessment, you'll be asked to provide relevant background information about your child. During the assessment, your child will complete a range of age-appropriate activities looking at different aspects of their learning.

You don't need to prepare your child or practise anything beforehand.

Then:

Parents are asked to leave their child for the assessment so that they can work independently and I can get the clearest picture of their individual skills.

What will you receive?

Your assessment includes:

✓ Comprehensive assessment
✓ Detailed written report
✓ Explanation of your child's strengths and difficulties
✓ Clear recommendations for supporting your child's learning
✓ Guidance for home and school
✓ Opportunity to discuss the findings
